DESCRIPTIONThe appearance of modern Soviet tanks in the 60s and 70s was the impulse for the American command, that they should start working on their own vehicles, able to compete with new opponents. In addition to the Abrams tanks program, development of the older Patton’s was continued. After a not entirely successful attempt of modification with short-barreled A2 gun capable of firing Shillelagh missiles, they decided to return to the standard tank guns. The choice fell on the British M68 105 mm cannon. M21 computer and modern sights and thermal imaging equipment were added for its support. Patton also had a stabilization mechanism for its main armament, which allowed precise fire while moving. Tank armor was boosted to 255 mm at the front of the vehicle, sometimes the reactive armor appeared as well. The tank entered service in 1989, a year before the advent of the U.S. Army M1 Abrams modern vehicles. Despite this, the M60 served in the forces of the US by 2005.
