B was armed with a low velocity 75 mm StuK 37 L/24 gun, an improved drivetrain, and wider tracks than its predecessor, the Ausf. A. In their role of assault guns and tank destroyers, the Sturmgeschütz series of self-propelled artillery proved a very successful one. Because of their low profile design, StuGs were hard to hit and easy to hide from the enemy --- making them highly effective weapons with 20,000 ‘killed’ tanks to their credit by early 1944.
